I am a sole proprietorship, the services I provide are considered taxable under the sales and use tax laws, am I able to register with the state as a sole proprietor?

Yes — if the services you provide are taxable in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, you absolutely can register for sales tax as a sole proprietor. Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana does not require you to form an LLC or corporation to obtain a Sales & Use Tax account. The state only cares about what you sell, not your business structure.

Ohio

  1. Register through the Ohio Business Gateway (OBG)
  2. Choose the appropriate Vendor’s License (county or transient)

Kentucky

  1. Sole proprietors register using their legal name and Social Security Number (or EIN if you prefer to use one).
  2. The registration is done through MyTaxes.ky.gov.
  3. Once registered, you receive a Sales & Use Tax Permit just like any other business.

Indiana

  1. Register through INBiz (Indiana’s business portal)
  2. You’ll receive a Registered Retail Merchant Certificate (RRMC)
